The Shadybrook Project
Merging the appeal of traditional ranchette style with contemporary organic sensibilities, 1300 Shadybrook is a sanctuary defined by clarity, intention, and lasting beauty.
Located in the heart of Beverly Hills, 1300 Shadybrook, once a neglected, chaotic space buried in disorder, has been reimagined by Architect Amr Samaha.
Blending Ranchette and Organic Design
The design of Shadybrook merges the appeal of traditional ranchette style with contemporary organic sensibilities, creating a space that is grounded in natural materials which evolve over time.
The exterior showcases Shou Sugi Ban, a charred wood finish achieved through an ancient Japanese technique. This process naturally preserves the wood, allowing it to develop a rich, textured patina as it ages. Accents of copper and Corten steel further enhance the façade, weathering gracefully to create a dynamic, ever-evolving surface that matures organically.
Inside, the design prioritizes both aesthetic and environmental consciousness. Opting for lime wash—a natural, non-toxic alternative to synthetic finishes—creates a subtle texture on the walls that shifts with the light. The flooring and surfaces throughout the home strike a balance between beauty and sustainability, featuring French white oak, Australian travertine, and Italian Cipollino marble to infuse the space with warmth and natural character.
Tactile Connections
Central to the design, Bankston + Civilian hardware elevates the home’s aesthetic through its refined craftsmanship and distinct tactile quality. The Hemisphere H04 Pull Handle finished in Polished Chrome and Bone provides a solid, weighted form that conveys lasting strength. Their semi-spherical ends mirror the circular cutouts detailing the front door, which filter light into the lobby while maintaining privacy.
The Zzziggurat Knob was chosen to serve as both a sculptural feature and a nod to historic forms, grounding the home’s design narrative. These finely crafted elements merge artistry with purpose, ensuring that every interaction within the home feels intentional and refined.
