Shadow Baking by Sans-Arc Studio
Serving classic baked goods with an Aussie twist, Shadow Baking’s first Adelaide outpost rises to the occasion, lightly glazing its surfaces with Bankston’s architectural hardware.
Occupying a compact 70 square metres in seaside Glenelg, this Swiss Army Knife of small spaces designed by architecture and interior design studio, Sans-Arc, confidently exposes the company’s baking processes. Casting visitors amongst the choreography of the making, they can observe pastry preparation whether dining in or ordering to go.
Theatrical Entry
Informing the experience, Bankston x Sans-Arc’s revolutionary Futurismo Return Door Lever is the first point of contact when entering the bakery through its glossy red door. Newly released in 2025, its bold geometric design is based upon an original member of the Super Collection that comprises a chamfered rod set upon a large sphere. Now counterbalanced by a smaller, second sphere at the inside end of the rod to secure a confident grip, it meets Australian accessibility standards, making it suitable across both commercial and residential spaces. Its sleek Smooth Nickel finish enhances its futuristic form, inviting entry. Combined with the door’s vibrant tone and glass portal providing glimpses within, this directional entrance celebrates production as performance.
“Conceived as a lightbox for early risers, Shadow Baking captures the rhythm and theatre of baking.”

Metallic props
The highly conceptual, yet equally practical bakery melds industrial kitchen materials with a graphic approach. A refined membrane of stainless steel screens with circular perforations soften the hard surfaces, offering sweet scents from the back of house’s preparation area. They mingle with galvanised steel tables, octagonal stools and benches drenched with butter yellow leather – all set upon a foundation of terrazzo pavers.
“In a deliberate inversion that places the sequence of baking, proving and cooling at the heart of the experience, the process – along with the planning – unfolds, traces and celebrates the act in a linear way.” – Matiya Marovich, founder of Sans-Arc
Bankston x Edition Office’s aluminium Hooks add welcoming punctuation marks. Appearing as though pegged into the walls, each cylinder reveals an inverted vault to form a hanging point, inviting diners to settle in and momentarily leave their mark on the space. Also offered in Bronze and Patinated Bronze, these minimal statements are ideal for private residences too, dotting entry halls for coats and bags through to bathroom’s for robes and kitchens for aprons.
Centre Stage
Forming Shadow Baking’s centrepiece is a deep terracotta red concrete counter crafted in collaboration with Forms Concrete that is crowned with baked goods. Its stacked presence and accordion edges conceptually allude to the fine layers of a mille-feuille pastry. “The result is an environment as tactile as it is transparent – a working bakery that celebrates process, people and pastry coming together,” adds Marovich.
