Our Impact

Conscious Design. Certified Impact.

At the heart of Bankston is the aspiration to be a thoughtful and consistent lab of design incubation.

With this in mind, we collaborate with leading minds in architecture and design to create original expressions of architectural hardware that redefine the category while striving to elevate responsibility within our industry.

Rooted in a purpose-led ethos, every product is designed to be as considered as it is functional. With every mindfully paced release, we aim for a lighter ecological footprint.

From prioritising recovered brass to using sustainably sourced Australian timber and 100% compostable or recyclable packaging, every choice we make is intentional. We aim to bring conscious craftsmanship into every home, one beautifully designed piece at a time.

Our Initiatives

  • Bankston has implemented extensive recycling programs across materials such as brass, steel, cardboard, plastics, organics, and electronics. These efforts contribute to a circular economy by ensuring valuable materials are reused and recycled rather than disposed of in landfills.

  • As of 2025, new solar panels on our Adelaide premises generate more than a third of the site’s electricity needs, cutting around 17 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year and marking an important step in reducing reliance on traditional energy sources.

  • Bankston is transitioning to a zero or low emissions vehicle fleet by the end of 2027, aligning our operations with broader environmental sustainability goals.

  • Bankston is working to eliminate single-use plastics and non-recyclable materials from our packaging in line with our Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) commitments. Materials are being designed out or replaced with compostable alternatives.

  • In April 2025, we switched from petroplastic mailers to home compostable mailers certified to AS 5810 (ABAP 20201), helping to keep an estimated 13,000 plastic bags out of landfill every year. Please remove all labels before disposal.

Our mailers are suitable for home compost. Check locally before disposing via your council food and garden organics collection. If not accepted, place in general waste. Do not recycle. Do not litter.

  • In February 2025, we replaced plastic pallet wrap in our operations with a home compostable alternative certified to AS 5810, removing approximately 750kg of plastic wrap each year.

This is part of our ongoing commitment to reducing single-use plastics, and as part of a Certified B Corporation™ we will keep working to reduce our impact.

  • Since 2019, we’ve been a signatory to the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), achieving the highest performance rating of ‘beyond best practice’ in APCO’s 2025 annual report. APCO set a target to make all packaging in Australia reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2030.

The 2030 targets are as follows:

    • 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging.
    • 70% of plastic packaging is recycled or composted.
    • 50% of average recycled content included in packaging (revised from 30% in 2020).
    • The phase-out of problematic and unnecessary single-use plastic packaging

Help us do even better by disposing of your Bankston packaging responsibly. Please consult your local council or authority to check domestic waste and recycling initiatives in your area.

  • At Bankston, we take a meticulous approach to selecting materials, considering their elemental properties, manufacturing capabilities, texture, colour, hand-feel and durability. Each collection is authored with its own material signature, from the domed brass and marble of Hemispheres to the sculptural timber of The Streaks. Where we work in solid brass, it is chosen for its corrosion resistance and longevity, and is recyclable at the end of its life. Where we can, we prioritise recovered brass.
