Callisto Hilltop Home by Amalia Graziani
Set on a hill above open meadow in New York's Hudson Valley, the Hilltop Home completes Amalia Graziani's five-year restoration of Callisto Hudson Valley.
The Hilltop Home is the second of two residences on Callisto Hudson Valley, a regenerative farm, culinary hub and retreat in High Falls, New York. It sits on a hill looking out across meadows toward the Mohonk mountains. Designer and developer Amalia Graziani has spent five years restoring the 88-acre property and its 1800s barns. This five-bedroom house was the last piece of that work.
A Hilltop Residence
Built in 1985, the house had gathered decades of dated detail, but its site, its views and its plan were worth keeping. Graziani gutted the interior and rebuilt it around them, with the original plan and its view across the valley left intact.
A Palette for Two Seasons
The brief was a home that works in both of the Hudson Valley’s seasons. It needed to feel warm and intimate on snowy nights around the fireplace, and fresh enough for high summer, when bright green foliage fills the large windows. Graziani looked to the region’s historic farmhouses for heavy millwork and exposed beams, and interpreted them through a contemporary lens rather than reproducing them. Layered through the rooms are objects gathered over a decade of travel and collecting, including tapestries sourced in Beirut.
Defining Features
The house is large and sprawls across the site, so it needed hardware with substance: pieces that could hold their own in big rooms. Graziani chose the Futurismo Lever from Super Collection by Sans-Arc in Smooth Nickel. Futurist design inspired the lever, which stacks a sphere on a chamfered rod. This clear, strong form let Graziani keep parts of the interior pared back while the hardware added visual interest. A rectangular backplate grounds the lever across the home’s thresholds, and at the linen cupboard it sits on a round rose, bringing the same form down to a more intimate scale.
Weight in the Hand
Each lever is forged from brass, then lightly linished, nickel plated and finished in a satin lacquer. The result is soft to the touch and industrial in character. At Callisto, its weight, texture and detailing show the craftsmanship before anything else does. The levers give a fixed point of material character to a home shaped by changing seasons and a growing collection, and they complete a restoration years in the making.
