Bellevue Hill House by Studio York

Located in Sydney, Bellevue Hill House (Bunyula) is a staged residential reconfiguration of a Federation-era dwelling, defined by the complexities of a previously inserted upper level within the original roof form.

Developed over an ongoing five-year collaboration between the client and Studio York, the project adopts an incremental approach to transformation. Rather than defaulting to demolition or expansion, the design operates within the existing footprint, recalibrating spatial hierarchy, structure and movement through precise, surgical interventions. The result is a residence that privileges continuity over spectacle—where the latent qualities of the original fabric are clarified and extended into a contemporary domestic framework.

Spatial Strategy and Material Language

The project is underpinned by a clear conceptual framework: to transform a fragmented plan into a cohesive spatial sequence that aligns with the rhythms of family life. Spaces unfold with measured progression, establishing a legible flow between communal and private zones while accommodating the inherent asymmetries of the structure.

Rather than treating the Federation context as a stylistic reference point, the design reinterprets its architectural language through a contemporary lens. A layered material palette, timber, stone, wallpaper and brass, creates depth and continuity, balancing heritage resonance with refined modernity.

There is a deliberate avoidance of singular architectural gestures. Instead, the project is resolved through proportion, alignment and material consistency, allowing each space to contribute to a broader, cohesive interior language.

Hardware as Architectural Continuity

Within this framework, architectural hardware is conceived not as an applied detail, but as an integral component of the architectural expression. Studio York approaches hardware as a form of “jewellery”—a device that both elevates and unifies the identity of the project.

The specification of the Zzzigurat Cupboard Knob and Zzzigurat Door Knob in Brushed Champagne PVD establishes a consistent material and tactile language across the residence. These elements operate as a connective thread between the home’s layered eras, mediating between heritage brass references and contemporary insertions.

Their geometric articulation introduces a subtle sculptural quality, while the Brushed Champagne PVD finish offers a nuanced warmth that complements both natural stone and timber surfaces. This consistency is balanced by moments of variation, where hardware responds to programmatic shifts and material junctions, reinforcing spatial differentiation without disrupting overall cohesion.

Custom detailing ensures that each piece integrates seamlessly with joinery and architectural elements, resolving transitions with precision and contributing to the clarity of the overall composition.

Tactility and Performance

Beyond their visual contribution, hardware elements play a critical role in shaping the user experience of the home. The weight, texture and responsiveness of solid brass components introduce a tactile dimension that elevates everyday interactions, transforming routine gestures into moments of sensory engagement.

Hardware also supports spatial legibility, subtly articulating thresholds between public and private domains, and between service and living areas. These cues are embedded within the architectural language, allowing the house to be intuitively navigated without reliance on overt delineation.

In Bellevue Hill House, hardware operates at the intersection of function and expression, anchoring the project’s material narrative while enhancing its performance as a lived environment.
