Bankston’s Guide to Adelaide’s Hospitality Scene

Bankston’s Super Collection Opens Doors to Adelaide’s Design Conscious Venues

Four Adelaide hospitality venues have fitted their entries with hardware from Bankston’s Super Collection, in collaboration with Sans-Arc Studio: elongated cylindrical forms and geometric pulls and levers with asymmetrical accents, the first point of contact in each space.

Recent additions to the collection include levers that enable access between spaces for those with disabilities, extending the Super Collection across cafés, restaurants and bars.

Led by director Matiya Marovich, Sans-Arc has designed some of Adelaide’s most recognised hospitality venues, from Mensa to Sofia Bistro, earning recognition at the SA and National Architecture Awards.

Shadow Baking, Glenelg

Serving classic baked goods with an Aussie twist, Shadow Baking’s first Adelaide outpost is fitted with Bankston’s architectural hardware.
Occupying a compact 70 square metres in seaside Glenelg, the space was designed by architecture and interior design studio Sans-Arc to expose the bakery’s own processes: visitors can watch pastry preparation whether dining in or ordering to go.
The first point of contact is Bankston x Sans-Arc’s Futurismo Return Door Lever, met through the bakery’s glossy red door. Newly released in 2025, its geometric design is based on an original member of the Super Collection: a chamfered rod set upon a large sphere, now counterbalanced by a smaller, second sphere at the inside end of the rod to secure a confident grip. It meets Australian accessibility standards, making it suitable across both commercial and residential spaces.

Sofia Bistro, Adelaide

A thoughtfully designed all-day diner, Sofia Bistro by Sans-Arc Studio sits within postmodern architecture and a vibrant interior.
Located on the edge of Adelaide’s CBD, Sofia Bistro is an adaptive re-use project inside a former 1980s low-rise office building. The ground floor has been transformed into an open, light-filled all-day diner that extends to the street, bringing the surrounding environment into the venue.
A key design feature is the Super Moon Pull Handle, crafted in Polished Chrome with a semicircle backplate. Its rounded form gives a striking tactile presence at the entrance: minimal, and built to suggest strength through simplicity. The Polished Chrome finish complements the bistro’s clean lines and materials throughout.

Mensa, Kent Town

Designed by Sans-Arc, the restaurant in Kent Town, South Australia, references materials found in traditional tavernas, with a stripped-back approach that invites interaction.
Exposed brick, terrazzo, warm timber and leather run through this contemporary Italian diner, alongside a Mediterranean menu with its own distinct flavour profile.
Just as the custom furnishings are stripped back and reduced to their minimal form, Sans-Arc’s Polished Chrome Associati Pull Handle 400mm gives patrons their first point of contact and a stylistic introduction to the interior. A member of the Super Collection, created by Sans-Arc in collaboration with Bankston, its minimal handle is an elongated line set upon a protruding dot.

Gelato Messina, Kent Town

Gelato Messina by Sans-Arc Studio. Since opening in Kent Town in January 2024, marking founder Nick Palumbo’s return to Adelaide after two decades on the East Coast, the store has taken guests back in time with a mid-century twist.

Sans-Arc Studio designed the space to resonate with the original Messina aesthetic, blending retro charm with mid-century elements, an appreciation for the era’s distinctive style that appeals to a new generation and to those nostalgic for it.

The storefront entrance features the Associati Pull in Polished Chrome, from the collaboration with Sans-Arc. Characterised by its minimalist aesthetic, the Associati pull takes a pared-down approach: a line and dot motif.
